Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove malodorant components in a gas economically in high efficiency by scrubbing said gas with an acidic aqueous solution containing bromine or iodine while ultraviolet rays are irradiated.
CONSTITUTION: While ultraviolet rays are irradiated from an ultraviolet lamp 3 provided in a scrubbing tower 2, a gas 1 to be treated introduced by a blower 6 is subjected to gas-liquid contact with a scrubbing liquid recirculated by a pump 7. The scrubbing liquid contains either one of a bromous acid salt, a bromate, hydrogen bromide, an iodous acid salt, an iodate and an iodide or two or more kinds of them and malodorant components are oxidized and removed by a combination effect of those additives and ultraviolet rays and the treated gas 1 is exhausted out of the system. A supplement liquid 8 containing said additives is poured into the recirculated scrubbing liquid and a corresponding amount of flooded water 9 is discharged. Further, the scrubbing liquid may be preliminarily irradiated with ultraviolet rays and contacted with a gas to be treated as a scrubbing liquid with a strong oxidizing power and a liquid prepared by absorbing an oxidizing agent which is generated by aerating the acidic aqueous solution containing said additives under the irradiation of ultraviolet rays in an alkaline aqueous solution may be used as a scrubbing liquid.
