PURPOSE:To constitute easily a current energy discharging circuit for the protection of thyristors by a method wherein only a thyristor bridge circuit on the current flowing side at present is selectively short-circuited just before an AC circuit-breaker is made to open. CONSTITUTION:The thyristor protection circuit 9 is provided. When a gate-ON command of the positive or the negative side is flowing, the thyristor protection circuit 9 short-circuits selectively only the thyristor bridge circuit on the side wherein the gate-ON command is flowing when an open command of the AC circuit-breaker 21 is sent out. When the gate-ON command of the positive or the negative side is not flowing on the contrary, only the thyristor bridge circuit on the side wherein the gate-ON command was flowing up to that time is short-circuited selectively when the open command of the AC circuit-breaker 21 is sent out.
