Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a nickel electrode of a good performance at a low cost, by impregnating a porous conductive body with both cobalt and nickel nitrate, before the impregnated body undergoes thermal decomposition at a temperature within a given range in an atmosphere of steam. CONSTITUTION:A porous conductive body, for example, a porous sponge nickel base plate is impregnated with an aqueous mixture solution of nickel nitrate and, for example, cobalt nitrate which contains cobalt ions. The impregnated plate is dried before it is heated at a temperature of 160-220 deg.C in an atmosphere of steam, thereby making the former mixture salt to undergo thermal decomposition. The above mentioned procedure is repeated given times, for example, 5 times, before the treated plate is subjected to alkali treatment or the like, thereby a nickel electrode being manufactured. The impregnation of the porous conductive body with nickel nitrate and cobalt ions may be divided into two individual processes. For instance, the porous conductive body can be impregnated with nickel nitrate, after cobalt, cobalt oxide or cobalt hydroxide is attached to the surface of the bone of the porous conductive body.
