Abstract
PURPOSE: To make the production of cathode which is low in cathode potential and retains activity without degradation for a long period of time in the production of cathode for electrolysis by forming an oxide on an Ni base body then impregnating the same with an Mo salt or an Mo salt and an Ni salt, and further subjecting the same to a reduction treatment.
CONSTITUTION: As cathode used in water electrolysis or salt water electrolysis, an electrode of an Ni base body having an Ni-Mo coating on the surface is used. In producing the same, the electrode of the Ni base body is heated to≥900°C in an atmosphere contg. oxygen, and the film of NiO is formed on the surface. Next, an aq. soln. of water soluble salts such as molybdenum chlorides, sulfates and ammonium salts is prepared, or further a mixed soln of said soln, and an aq. soln. of water soluble salts of Ni such as chlorides, sulfates is prepared, and the porous NiO coating is impregnated therein with this solution. After this is dried, it is heated to 300W600°C in gaseous hydrogen flow to reduce the salts of Mo and Ni to the metallic state, whereby the Ni-based cathode having the coating layer of the Ni-Mo alloy is produced.
