Abstract
PURPOSE: To accelerate the hydrolyzing reaction of an alkylene carbonate and obtain the corresponding alkylene glycol in high selectivity, by using an ammonium salt or tertiary amine as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylene carbonate, particularly ethylene, propylene or butylene carbonate, is hydrolyzed in the presence of an ammonium salt expressed by formula I (R1WR4 are H, alkyl, alkenyl or aryl; X is I, Br or Cl) or a tertiary amine expressed by formula II (R1WR3 are alkyl, alkenyl or aryl) as a catalyst in an amount of at least 0.05mol%, preferably at least 0.5mol%, more preferably 0.5W10mol% based on the raw material carbonate, preferably at 120W200°C, to give the corresponding alkylene glycol in high selectivity.
