Abstract
PURPOSE: To accelerate the hydrolyzing reaction of an alkylene carbonate and obtain the corresponding alkylene glycol in high selectivity, by using an alkaline metallic halide as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylene carbonate, particularly ethylene, propylene or butylene carbonate, is hydrolyzed in the presence of an alkaline metallic halide, e.g. sodium chloride, bromide or iodide, potassium chloride, bromide or iodide, as a catalyst, in an amount of at least 0.05mol%, preferably at least 0.5mol%, more preferably 0.5W 10mol% based on the raw material carbonate, preferably at 120W200°C, to give the corresponding alkylene glycol in high selectivity.
