Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, in high yield and industrially advantageously, by the hydration of an alkylene oxide, in the presence of an alkylene carbonate and a quaternary phosphonium salt as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylene oxide is hydrated, in the presence of an alkylene carbonate, e.g. propylene carbonate, and a quanternary phosphonium salt of the formula (R1WR4 are alkyl, alkenyl, or aryl respectively; X is I, Br or Cl) as a catalyst, e.g. tributylmethylphosphonium iodide, in an amount of at least 0.01mol% based on the alkylene oxide as the raw material, to give an alkylene glycol.
EFFECT: Decrease in the amount of water nearly to the stoichiometric one, and a smooth reaction process, without requiring devices of expensive materials.
