Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a monoalkylene glycol, economically, in high conversion and selectivity, by reacting an alkylene oxide with water in the presence of CO2 using a catalyst comprising an alkaline earth metal halide at a low temperature.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylene glycol of formula II (R1WR4 are H, 1W3C alkyl, 6C aryl, 2W3C alkenyl or 3W6C cycloalkyl) is prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide of formula I with water in the presence of CO2 using a catalyst comprising an alkaline earth metal halide (e.g. chloride, bromide, iodide and fluoride of calcium, strontium, barium, etc.). The reaction temperature is 20W250°C, pref. 50W200°C. The alkylene oxide can be converted completely to the alkylene glycol at a relatively low temperature with little production of polyalkylene glycols.
