Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound having vasodilating activity, in high yield and purity, by reacting 1-(3-sulfonyloxypropyl)-3,7-dimethylxanthine with acetylacetone in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formulaIis prepared by reacting the compound of formula II[R is lower alkyl, (substituted) aryl or aralkyl]with acetylacetone of formula III in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst (e.g. BF3, AlCl3, SO3, SiF4, etc.) in a solvent such as ethyl alcohol under heat refluxing. The amount of the Lewis acid is as low as 3W7wt% of the compound of formula II, and that of the compound of formula III is pref. 1W2mol per 1mol of the compound of formula II. The compound of formula II used as the starting material can be prepared easily by reacting 1-(3-hydroxypropyl)-3,7-dimethylxanthine with R-SO2Cl.
