Abstract

PURPOSE: A mixture resulting from reaction of sodium methacrylate with epichlorohydrin is washed with water, then extracted with water to remove by-products efficiently, thus giving high-quality title compound that is used as a starting material of high polymers.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of glycidyl methacrylate by reaction between sodium methacrylate and epochlorohydrin, the reaction mixture containing the sodium chloride formed on the reaction is washed with water and separated into two layers, the aqueous layer containing sodium chloride and the oily layer containing no sodium chloride. The aqueous layer containing sodium chloride is discarded. Water is added to the oily layer to extract the glycidol into the aqueous layer, thus removing the glycidol, a by-product. The oily layer is distiled to give title compound. The amount of water for extracting the glycidol is 10W200 parts per 100 parts of the oily layer and per one extraction operation.
