Abstract
PURPOSE: To recycle a polyethylene glycol dialkyl ether used as a catalyst of the titled reaction catalyzed with an alkali metal hydroxide, by extracting the catalyst from an organic layer to an aqueous layer, and separating from the aqueous layer taking advantage of the clouding point of the ether.
CONSTITUTION: The titled reaction catalyzed with an alkali metal hydroxide is carried out in the presence of a compound of formula (R1 and R2 are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, or pentyl; (n) is the average number of oxyethylene units and is 6W 30), and the alkali metal salt is removed from the reaction mixture, which is then separated into an organic layer and a water layer. The organic layer is treated with water, etc. to extract the catalyst into the aqueous layer, and the reaction products, etc. are separated from the extraction residue. The aqueous layer is heated above the clouding point of the compound of formula to form the layer of the compound, which is then recycled to the titled reaction process.
EFFECT: The applicability of the titled reaction is improved and the process is simplified by the use of the compound of formula which is chemically stable and available at a low cost, as a catalyst.
