Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compounds in high yield, by subjecting the reaction product prepared by reacting formaldehyde with a formic ester and CO in the preesnce of a strong acidic catalyst to the hydrolysis or alcoholysis to decompose the condensed dimer.
CONSTITUTION: A reaction product obtained by reacting formaldehyde wit a formic ester and CO in the presence of a strong acidic catalyst, e.g. strongly acidic cationic resin, mainly a compound of formula I (R is 1W10C alkyl) to formula VI, is hydrolyzed or alcoholized to give glycolic acid or an alkoxyacetic acid or an ester thereof. The condensed dimers expressed by the formulas IVWVI are converted into a glycolic ester, alkoxyacetic ester or alkoxyacetic acid by the hydrolysis or alcoholysis. High-boiling substances other than the dimers are almost decomposed and converted into the compounds expressed by formulas IWIII.
