Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction of a saturated aliphatic aldehyde with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst is followed by the reaction of the product with an alcohol wherein the reactants are fed in the order cited above, thus producing the titled substance economically in high yield, which is used as a detergent.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of a catalyst containing hydrogen fluoride, preferably consisting of hydrogen fluoride and a 2W10C saturated aliphatic ether, preferably ethyl ether, the reaction between a saturated aliphatic aldehyde of 1W16 carbon atoms such as formaldehyde or acetaldehyde and carbon monoxide. Then, a saturated aliphatic alcohol of 1W12 carbon atoms such as methanol is made to react with the product to give a compound of formula I and II (R1 is 1W15C alkyl; R2 is 1W12C alkyl). The reaction temperature is -30W100°C, preferably 0W60°C and the molar ratio of hydrogen fluoride to the aldehyde is 1W30. The molar ratio of the alcohol to the aldehyde is 1W5 preferably.
