Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable casting to be started without using any dummy bar by inserting a closing device which constitutes a hollow rectangular parallelopiped opening at the top face into a mold in such a manner as to fit nearly in close contact therewith.
CONSTITUTION: A block 28 is projected from the inside wall surfaces of the long sides 6 of a mold and a closing device 31 is fitted to the mold 3 bottom and is supported by the block 28, whereby the mold outlet is closed. Connecting fittings and a chill are put into the closing device 31 and a sealig material is sandwiched between the inside walls of the mold. While the mold is being cooled as specifid by cooling water flow passages 13 and cooling water spraying nozzles, molten metal is flowed into the mold 3 and is cooled. When the solidified shell grows sufficiently thick, the block 28 is retreated up to the inside wall surfaces of the longer sides 6 of the mold plate. Driving rollers are turned to move a driving belt downward. At the same time, the mold 3 is moved vertically. Since the upper part of the ingot drawing device is gripping the closing device 31, the ingot having solidified in one piece with the closing device 31 is drawn downward.
