Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the Ti-clad steel having superior joint performance by inserting Cr, Mo or V as insert material, in a diffusion welding method performing welding through static pressure in the state of solid phase.
CONSTITUTION: Insertion of Cr, Mo or V is accomplished by plating or insertion of their foils. In the case of plating, the above-mentioned metal is plated on Fe, after which the plated surface and Ti are diffusion-welded. In the case of the insertion of the foil, the above-mentioned metal foil is inserted between Ti and Fe and diffusion- welding is done. The thickness of the plating or foil is preferably 5W500 microns. The diffusion welding is accomplished in a vacuum atmosphere (10-4 torr) at heating temperatures 700W1,100°C and pressing force 0.1kg/mm2 or less for pressing time of 10 minutes or more. This yields the joint of the superior strength of 14kg/mm2 or more in ASTM shearing strength.
