Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the peeling resistance of a PbO2 layer and the corrosion resistance of anode against acidic electrolyte by producing the anode for generating oxygen through water electrolysis by coating the surface of a conductive metal base material with PbO2 by way of a specific intermediate coating layer.
CONSTITUTION: As the electrode for use in generating a gaseous O2 in anode by the DC electrolysis of the water acidified with sulfuric acid in which a slight amount of NO3 ions and CN ions coexist, first, Pd, Ir and Ta which are much more inexpensive than Pt having hitherto been used as an intermediate layer are coated alone or as mixture in the form of Pb metal, PbO, or IrO2+Ta2O5 on the surface of a conductive metallic plate of high corrosion resistance such as Ti. A PbO2 layer of 0.05W0.6mm thickness is formed thereon, whereby the anode is obtained. Even if the thickness of the PbO2 layer is thin, the corrosion by the electrolyte, when it penetrates into the anode past the pin holes in the PbO2 layer, is prevented by the intermediate layer, whereby the Ti base plate is prevented from being corroded and the PbO2 layer from peeling.
