Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the position of a weld line with good accuracy by irradiating two systems of light alternately to the weld line in a manner that part of irradiated surfaces are superposed and detecting the difference in the quantities of each reflected light thereof.
CONSTITUTION: The leading ends of the optical fibers 4, 5 of a detector are positioned downward above a weld line WL. Light such as laser light from a light source 1 is split by a means 2 and passes alternately through the fibers 4, 5 by a changeover means 3, and is condensed by lenses 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b. These beams of the light irradiate the surface of the work W alternately and partly superposedly. The respective beams of the reflected light pass through fibers 8, 9, and are converted to electric signals by converters 10, 11. Further, these enter an adder 16 via filters 12, 13, amplifiers 14, 15. The adder operates the difference in the quantities of the reflected light of the two systems, puts the output thereof into a synchronous detector 17, which in turn detects the biasing of the weld line W. This mechanism enables most of the major parts of the sensor to be mounted in the places further from the torch of a robot.
