Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare starch esterified with acetoacetic acid, useful for adhesive etc. and giving improved water resistance, adhesive properties, etc. with crosslinking agents, by reacting starch with diketene thereby imparting chemical reactivity to the starch.
CONSTITUTION: (A) Starch (e.g. corn starch etc.) is pretreated with sodium acetate etc., dried, fed into a reactor and thermally reacted with (B) sprayed liquid diketene or gaseous diketene at 20W120°C, preferably at 50W110°C in the atomosphere of an inert gas in the presence or absence of a solvent or a nonsolvent. After the completion of the reaction, the product is taken out and dried under reduced pressure to obtain the desired starch esterified with acetoacetic acid, exhibiting the IR absorption of the carbonyl group of acetoacetyl group at 1,700W1,800cm-1.
