Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce strong swirls of compressed fuel air mixture within operative cylinders of an engine during a partial cylinder running by utilizing compressing actions of resting cylinders to compress air or exhaust gas to a high pressure which is supplied to the operative cylinders at the initiation of each compressing stroke. CONSTITUTION:Upon transition from a high load running region with the whole cylinders #1-#6 to an engine low load running region, fuel supply to the cylinders #2, #4 and #6 of a resting cylinder block 10a is cut and simultaneously a magnet valve 14 is opened. As a result, communication passages 12A-12C between the cylinders are brought into communicating condition when opening and closing valves 15 are opened by operation of a cam 20. In this condition, transmission of gas from the operative to the resting cylinders is prevented by means of a check valve 13. Accordingly, only when the opening and closing valves 15 are open and besides the pressure within the resting cylinders is higher than the pressure within the operative cylinders, transmission of gas to the operative cylinders is enabled so that strong swirls of compressed air fuel mixture are produced within the operative cylinders #1, #3 and #5.
