PURPOSE:To permit to control the furnace temp. by a method wherein an evaluation function is calculated about every each billet by using an estimated and target temperature in a predetermined position and various weight factors of each billet to decide the furnace temp. of each zone as a function of the evaluation function. CONSTITUTION:A present temp. of each billet in the multizone type continuous heating furnace is determined in consider of various factors. Further, from a dimention and a scheduled extraction pitch of each billet positioned at an extraction side from a target billet, a stay time in each zone when each billet is transferred over a definite distance corresponding to >1/3 and <2/3 of a length of each zone and reaches a position Pi is estimated. Then, from the present temp. of each billet, an estimated stary time, the dimension of the billet, a heat property value, heat conductive property of the furnace and a present temp. of each zone, a temp. theta i<p> of the billet when it reaches the position is estimated. The estimation function J is calculated by formula I by using said estimated temp. theta i<p>, the objective temp. theta i and the weight factor omega i and the furnace temp. in the l-th zone is decided as a function of the function J to carry out the control. By this control, the saving of the fuel consumption and the improvement of product qualities are attained.
