Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent sticking and flicker by making a photoconductor with a diode function forward bias status during the vertical blanking period.
CONSTITUTION: At first, an n+ type area which is used as a source area is formed in p type semiconductor substrate 10. When insulating layer 15 and electrode 16 are formed on substrate 10, layer 15 separates electrode 16 electrically from substrate 10 and connects electrode 16 electrically with area 11. After forming photoconductor 18 with a diode function on layer 15 and electrode 16, transparent electrode 19 is formed on photoconductor 18 and incident light 21 is irradiated from the electrode 19 side. In a solid image pickup device having the constitution mentioned above, photoconductor 18 is made forward bias status during the vertical blanking period and, therefore, excessive charge generated in photoconductor 18 flows into substrate 10. Thus, the voltage to be applied to photoconductor 18 can be increased without overflow of a charge transfer stage, preventing sticking and flicker.
