Abstract
PURPOSE: The reaction of a phenol corresponding to the objective compound with a crotonolactone is carried out in the presence of a base to produce title compound useful as intermediate of various kinds of agricultural chemical and organic chemical with high-purity in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between a phenol of formula I [R is H, formula II and III (Y, Z are H, halogen, lower alkyl, trifluoromethyl, nitro, nitrile)] and a lactone of formula IV (R1 is H, lower alkyl) is conducted in the presence of a base, e.g., alkali metal, hydroxide of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal and thereby the base inhibits the side reactions and the high-purity product is obtained in high yield. In the reaction, the compound is formula IV is used by an amount of 0.9W2.0 times the molar quantity of the compound of formula I and the base is used by an amount of over the equivalent, preferably 1.0W1.2 times the equivalent. The reaction mixture is heated to 80W220°C, preferably 120W200°C and the reaction is effected under stirring.
