Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently separate phenol, by adding water containing dissolved carbon dioxide to a waste liquid containing the phenol.
CONSTITUTION: Water, in which much carbon dioxide is dissolved under pressure, is added to a waste liquid which is produced in a phenol resin manufacturing plant, coke chemical plant, coal gas washer or the like and contains phenol. Neutralization is thus caused. The phenol is separated. The phenol is buoyed up by carbon dioxide bubbles generated in the water. The consumption of the carbon dioxide is lower and the pH level can be more easily adjusted in this method than in another method of supplying only carbon dioxide for neutralization. As a result, a phenol separation layer of high concentration is formed. The efficiency of work is high, and even a compact and simple structure thereof is satisfactory for the purpose.
