Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove the sulfur oxides efficiently by a low cost adsorbent through a mechanism wherein a coke which contains vanadium produced as a by-product in a softening process of heavy oil is used as an adsorbent in case of removing sulfur oxides in an exhaust gas by a dry desulfurizing method.
CONSTITUTION: The combustion exhaust gas 1 containing sulfur oxides (SOx) is passed through an absorbing apparatus 2 filled with the coke which contains vanadium particles 2a produced in a softening process of heavy oil as a by-product and the SOx within the exhaust gas 1 is adsorbed to provide the purified exhaust gas 3. The above described coke 2a is one which is generated in a flexi-coking process, a fluid coking process or the like and the coke accumulated with metals contained in heavy oil, especially, vanadium at a high concentration is used. Thereby, the SO2 occupying the greater part of the SOx in an exhaust gas is converted to SO3 by the catalytic action of vanadium and the adsorbing speed of total SOx is enhanced.
