Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove mercury efficiently and economically by a method wherein a solution containing pulverized elemental sulfur is contacted to a refinery exhaust gas containing mercury so as to adsorb mercury onto sulfur, and the sulfur with a large amount of mercury adsorbed thereon is separated by wet-type classification.
CONSTITUTION: The solution containing particulate elemental sulfur having high activity, such as that produced by the Claus method, is used as an absorbing liquid. The refinery exhaust gas containing mercury is introduced into an absorption tower and is contacted to the absorbing liquid, whereby the mercury in the exhaust gas is removed by adsorption onto sulfur. Since the sulfur with mercury adhered thereon has an increased specific gravity, the absorbing liquid is classified in a wet system by utilizing the difference in specific density, and only the sulfur carrying a large amount of mercury adsorbed thereon is taken out to the exterior of the system, while the sulfur carrying a small amount of mercury adhered thereon is left in the absorbing tower. Accordingly, the adsorption of mercury can be accelerated as compared to that where the whole amount of sulfur is replaced by fresh sulfur.
