Abstract
PURPOSE: To remove ammoniac nitrogen in waste water through the regeneration and reuse of a cation exchange member by feeding the member, which has adsorbed NH4-N through ion exchange, with a regenerating solution containing Na+ at a pH higher than a specific value and by passing a gas to the member.
CONSTITUTION: A cation exchange member formed of zeolite, cation exchange resin, or the like is contacted with waste containing NH4-N for removal of the NH4-N through ion exchange adsorption. For regeneration of the cation exchange member of which the performance in NH4-N ion exchange and adsorption has been reduced, the member is immersed in a regenerating solution containing Na at a pH above 10 (e.g. aqueous solution of NaOH, Na2CO3, or mixture thereof with NaCl), and a gas such as air is introduced in the solution. Free NH4-N in the regenerating solution is converted into NH3 by the action of the strong alkali, and removed with the introduced gas. Regenerated cation exchange member is reused.
