Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound having high purity and excellent appearance, in high efficiency, economically, by stirring molten m-dinitrobenzene and hot aqueous solution of a surface active agent for ≥1 hour, and cooling and crystallizing the mixture for ≥1 hours.
CONSTITUTION: Crude m-dinitrobenzene obtained by the nitration of benzene, etc., is pref. preliminary purified (e.g. by treating with an aqueous solution of caustic soda), and mixed with an aqueous solution of a proper surface active agent. The mixture is stirred for 1W10hours, (pref. about 2 hours) with heating, and then slowly cooled below 50°C in 1W10hours (pref. about 2 hours). The crystallized objective compound has a purity of ≥99.9% and a freezing point of ≥89.95°C, and is free from colored impurities. It is suitable for the production of high purity m-phenylenediamine, etc. The present purification process has high treating efficency, process efficiency, excellent operating simplicity, and reduced amount of waste water.
