Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the wear resistance and toughness of a sintered material by adding a specified amt. of one or more out of Zr, Mg, Cr and Ti, and Al2O3 and/or ZrO2 to cubic system boron nitride.
CONSTITUTION: 15W79.9vol% of cubic system boron nitride (BN) is blended with 0.1W5% of one or more out of Zr, Mg, Cr and Ti, and 20W80% of Al2O3 and/or ZrO2 and inevitable impurities. This blend is pulverized, and the resulting homogeneously mixed powder is sintered with an ultrahigh press. and ultrahigh temp. generator. The blended metals of the sintered material have a great affinity for the BN and the oxides, improves the bonding strength among sintered material composing grains, and enhances the toughness of the material. Since this material is comparable to a WC-base sintered hard alloy in toughness, it shows superior performance when used as a material for a cutting tool, etc.
