Abstract
PURPOSE: To measure the length correctly, easily and rapidly by measuring the double propagation time required until the ultrasonic wave returns after the reflection at the end of a measured body with an ultrasonic wave probe located on the measuring line of a measured body at given intervals.
CONSTITUTION: When a length X by which the end of a piping 2 is inserted into the inside of a dresser joint 1 is to be measured, an ultrasonic wave oblique angle probe 3 is located at two positions with a given interval l in the length measuring direction on the surface of the piping 2. The ultrasonic wave is projected into the piping material in the length measuring direction at these positions with a given angle of refraction α, the reflection wave is received from a piping end 4 and the double propagation times t1, t2 are measured. By the measured results of the double propagation times t1, t2 and the location of the ultrasonic wave oblique angle probe 3, the inserted length X can be calculated correctly, easily and speedily without knowing the sound velocity relating with the condition of the field where the piping is installed.
