Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to accurately measure the size of a different medium (or a flaw in a material) existing in a medium (or material) in accordance with the time difference between the echors produced by the direct reflection of the ultrasonic sound flux and the echors of surface waves.
CONSTITUTION: Ultrasonic waves are oscillated by a flow detecting element 4 at a suitable angle with respect to the leading end of a flaw 2 of a material. A portion of the sound flux oscillated hits the leading end portion of the flaw 2 and returns to the element 4 in the form of the echors 6 directly reflected. A portion of the waves hitting the leading end of the flaw 2 propagates as a surface wave around the flaw 2 and then is converted by the leading end of the flaw 2 into a transversal wave so that is returns as the echor 7 having a remarkably small level to the element 4 with a time delay. This echor 7 of the surface wave 8 is taken into consideration so that the depth G of the flaw 2 is measured by the difference ΔT between the arrival time T1 of the echor 6 at the element 6 due to the direct reflection and the arrival time T2 of the echor 7 at the element.
