Abstract

PURPOSE: To know the size of a defect in a specific shape accurately under no influence of the directivity of a wave reflected by the defect, by finding the size of the defect by observing a bottom echo when using a bevel probe.
CONSTITUTION: Ultrasonic pulses emitted by bevel probe 4 are reflected by bottom 2 of a probed material and then detected by bevel probe 5. If there is defect 6 on the passage of this ultrasonic pulse, reflected waves are generated and some of them in the opposite direction of the incident wave propagate as shown by arrows (p) and (q) and are detected by probe 4, so that waveform 7 of the defect echo pulses will be observed. Further, waveform 9 of the bottom echo pulse is observed at a position when constant time T0 elapses since the transmission ultrasonic wave is radiated 8. Then, area S of defect 6 is obtained from difference Q between the amplitude of the bottom echo pulse in case of the occurrence of this defect 6 and that in case of no defect. Consequently, no influence of the directivity of the reflected wave due to the defect is exerted, so that the relatively-accurate measurement of the size of the defect can be realized.
