Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily determine the direction in which waves move, the speed of waves and wave-length of waves by using a plurality of detectors having a detection beam and set in the sea, whereby reflected waves from the sea surface are received and recorded; and variations in reception signals with the lapse of time are checked.
CONSTITUTION: Detectors 1, 2 having horizontally narrow and vertically wide detection beams 3, 4, respectively are set in the sea such that the axes of the beams 3, 4 cross each other at right angles in the same vertical plane. Pulses emitted from the detectors 1, 2 are propagated diagonally upwardly such as to radiate the surface of the sea. Reflected waves from that portion of the surface of the sea which is directly above the detectors are received first, and reflected waves from such portions of the surface of the sea which are far away from the detectors are then received. The reception signals are supplied onto the paper fed at a constant speed from a recorder. A recorded image thus obtained is analyzed. Thus, the direction in which waves move, the speed of waves and wave-length of waves can be determined.
