Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the method and instrument capable of quick and simple measurement of lengths without reference to the condition of installation of an ultrasonic wave probe by measuring double propagation times in the depth and length directions by means of an ultrasonic wave probe installed on the surface of a measured body where a length in one direction has been given.
CONSTITUTION: When an inserted length X into the inside of a dresser joint 1 at the end of a piping 2 is to be measured, two kinds of measurement are carried out. One is to locate an ultrasonic wave probe 4 on a piping surface 3, project ultrasonic wave in the direction rectangular to the piping surface 3, receive the reflected wave from the internal surface of a piping 5 and measure the double propagation time t1. The other is to place an ultrasonic wave probe 6 on the piping surface at a given distance l from the end of the joint 1, project ultrasonic wave toward a piping end 7 at a given refractive angle α, receive the reflected wave and measure the double propagation time t2. From these findings the sound velocity and the inserted length X to the joint 1 of the piping 2 can be obtained quickly and simply where the measured body is installed.
