Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a scavenging system for internal combustion engine, in which a means for interrupting air compressing function of under piston is provided so as to actuate under-piston pump in low load region but to make the same inoperative in high load region, whereby it is enabled to lower fuel consumption over the entire range of engine load.
CONSTITUTION: In order to achieve switching between operative condition and inoperative condition of under piston, a check valve 9 for allowing air to flow only from common air sump 1 to a first scavenging chamber 2 is designed to be movable. That is, an opening regulating means is provided for enabling to keep the check valve 8 open. Or otherwise, in order to achieve the above switching, a valve 11 is disposed between the common air sump 1 and a second scavenging chamber 2 or between the common air sump 1 and the first scavenging chamber 2, so that under- piston pump is made to operate in low-load region where scavenging pressure and scavenging efficiency are both low but the under-piston pump is made inoperative in high-load region where scavenging pressure is high and scavenging of combustion gas is not complete.
