Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic head core piece excellent in resistance to wear by forming a Cr oxide coating on a core pipece of a Ni-Fe alloy including Cr by a specific heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: On the surface of a core piece made of a Ni-Fe-Cr alloy (Cr-based Permalloy), a chromium oxide coating of more than 0.5μ in thickness is formed by magnetic annealing (e.g. in hydrogen of -70°C in dew point at 1100°C for three hours) and by a heat treatment of 700W1100°C in wet gas of 0W40°C in dew point (e.g. wet hydrogen). The above-mentioned method provides the formation of a chromium oxide coating only by a heat treatment, so that core pieces excellent in resistance to wear can be mass-produced at low cost.
