The cross-sectional area of at least part of the oil supply path, e.g. the passage 15 and the port 16, is less than the cross-sectional area of at least part of the return path, e.g. the passage 12 and the port 14 so that the pressure in the cavity 10 during engine operation is close to the substantially atmospheric pressure in the casing 8. The passages 12 and 15 may be formed by grooves or flats machined on the guide. The annular cavity may be formed by a groove on the guide exterior communicating with the guide interior through radial bores. Further, annular cavities may be provided in the guide and communicate with the oil supply and the casing interior. A side valve engine may have annular cavities adjacent opposite ends of the guide.
