1479076 Lubricating IC engine valves FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 4 July 1975 [18 July 1974] 28406/75 Addition to 1412075 Heading F1B An annular cavity 10 in the valve guide 4 of a supercharged diesel engine valve 1 communicates permanently with an oil supply passage 15, e.g. connected to the engine lubricant system, and an oil return passage 12 communicating with the interior of the valve gear casing 8 at or slightly above atmospheric pressure. The cross-sectional area of at least part of the oil supply path, e.g. the passage 15 and the port 16, is less than the cross-sectional area of at least part of the return path, e.g. the passage 12 and the port 14 so that the pressure in the cavity 10 during engine operation is close to the substantially atmospheric pressure in the casing 8. The passages 12 and 15 may be formed by grooves or flats machined on the guide. The annular cavity may be formed by a groove on the guide exterior communicating with the guide interior through radial bores. Further, annular cavities may be provided in the guide and communicate with the oil supply and the casing interior. A side valve engine may have annular cavities adjacent opposite ends of the guide.
