Abstract
1,188,424. Lubricating; cam followers. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. 26 April, 1968 [7 June, 1967], No. 20008/68. Headings F2A and F2K. [Also in Division F1] In an hydraulic valve tappet the flow of oil to passages 84, 86, Fig. 1, for flow to I.C. engine valve gear, Fig. 9 (not shown), through a push-rod 58 is metered by its passage from the inlet 44 in the tappet body 22 through the clearance between the plunger 52 and the bore 34. The metering effect is maintained substantially constant during reciprocation of the plunger within its operating limits by providing a metering land 50, Fig. 1, in the bore of the body or a metering land 184, Fig. 7, on the plunger, the total length of which always cooperates with the plunger surface or bore, respectively, during plunger reciprocation. The metering lands 50 and 184 are defined between grooves 42 and 48 and grooves 186 and 244, respectively. The plunger may be formed as two sections 214 and 242, Fig. 7, abutting at the level of the inlets (246), Fig. 8 (not shown), to the plunger reservoir 224 which may be formed partly in the upper section of the plunger. A sealing ring (164), Fig. 6 (not shown), may be provided between the upper end of the plunger and the bore of the body. A spring- biased check valve 82, 240 at the inner end of the plunger 52, 190 allows oil to flow to the tappet chamber 72, 232 to replace leakage between the body 22, 192 and plunger.
