Abstract

1379878 I C engine valve gear JOHNSON PRODUCTS Inc 8 Aug 1973 [11 Aug 1972] 37518/73 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] Engine lubrication oil fed via inlet ports 34, 36 to a reservoir 22 of an hydraulic back-lash adjuster Fig. 2, for an O.H.C. I. C. engine Fig. 1 (not shown) or an hydraulic tappet Fig. 5 for a push-rod I. C. engine, is lowered in pressure within the adjuster, or tappet, reservoir 22 to a pressure less than that supplied to the inlet ports 34, 36 to reduce the pump-up effect at high engine speeds thus permitting higher engine speed operation while maintaining full control of the valve gear. The pressure reduction is effected by a reservoir metering cap 46 which forms a restrictor in the vicinity of the inlet port 36 and has a groove 53 formed in the cup lip 52 permitting a metered flow of oil from the inlet port 36 as from the reservoir 22 into a bore 58 of the adjuster or tappet closure member, this both reducing the pressure in the reservoir 22 and providing controlled lubrication of the valve gear.
