Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide tough cast iron with superior vibration absorbing capacity by adding a specified amt. of an element for spheroidizing hyper-eutectoid graphite to cast iron together with an element for disturbing spheroidizing of eutectic graphite and proeutectic graphite.
CONSTITUTION: Graphite other than hyper-eutectoid graphite in cast iron is prevented from being spheroidized by restricting the amt. of C in the cast iron to 2W 4%; the amt. of Si as an element for precipitating graphite by decomposition of cementite to 0.5W4%; the amt. of Ca as an element for spheroidizing hyper-eutectoid graphite to 0.001W0.03%; the amt. of one or more out of Al, Sb, As, Bi, Pb, Se, Te, Sn and Ti as elements for disturbing spheroidizing of eutectic graphite and proeutectic graphite to 0.1W1%; the amt. of S and O preventing precipitation of graphite to S≤0.03% and 0≤0.08%; and the total amt. of alkaline earth metals except Ca and rare earth elements to below 0.03%. Hyper-eutectoid graphite alone is spheroidized, and proeutectic graphite and eutectic graphite are precipitated as graphite flakes, resulting in tough cast iron having slightly inferior mechanical properties and superior vibration absorbing capacity.
