Abstract

PURPOSE: To stabilize cast iron structure and obtain vermicular graphite structure by desulfurizing molten cast iron then making combination use of specific amounts of rare earth elements, Cu, Sn, et. with Mg or Mg alloy as a graphite spheroidizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: Molten cast iron is beforehand desulfurized to make the content of S≤0.020%. At the time of adding Mg or Mg alloy as a graphite spheroidizing agent to this low sulfur molten cast iron, a rare earth metal such as Ce or Mischmetal is added at ≤0.03% at the same time, and Cu and Sn are added simultaneously to allow 0.002W0.020% Mn, 0.2W0.8% Cu and 0.02W0.10% Sn to remain in the cast iron. The structure of the cast product of the cast iron has the vermicular structure wherein vermicular graphite exists stably with pearlite as base, thus the casting of superior heat resistance, thermal fatigue characteristic, abrasion resistance, machineability, and growth resistance is obtained.
