Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a long life carbon thin film for converting the electric charge of heavy ion beam by vacuum depositing nickel chloride on a weathered glass substrate and by depositing carbon on the nickel chloride by arc discharge.
CONSTITUTION: A glass substrate is washed with a detergent, an org. solvent, a weak acid or the like and allowed to stand in a constant humidity thermostat of around 70°C and high humidity to weather the substrate. This weathered substrate is placed in a vacuum deposition device and held at 300°C to deposit nickel chloride in a vacuum of 1×105Torr. Carbon is then deposited on the nickel chloride by arc discharge. After reducing the temp. the substrate is taken out into air, and the resulting carbon thin film is exfoliated, allowed to float to the surface of water, and picked up on a holding frame, thus obtaining a carbon thin film for converting the electric charge of heavy ion beam.
