Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover the performance of an ion exchange membrane without damaging it by bringing the ion exchange membrane into contact with a mixture of an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal salt and an alkaline compound and an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An ion exchange membrane is cleansed by bringing it into contact with a mixture of an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal salt and an alkaline compound and an organic solvent, or passing a mixture of an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal salt and an alkaline compound and an organic solvent through an electrolytic bath in which the ion exchange membrane is set and electricity is applied. The alkali metal salt used includes NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4, etc., and its preferred concentration in aqueous solution is 0.1W3.0 N. Also, the alkaline compound used includes NaOH, NH4OH, etc., and its preferred concentration in aqueous solution is 0.01W3.0 N. The preferred organic solvent used includes alcohols.
