Abstract

PURPOSE: To oxidize and decompose organic matter in waste water by contacting the water with a zeolite catalyst in the presence of chlorine compound, the catalyst being obtained through ion exchange with cobalt ions and nickel ions, linsing, and contact with chlorine compound.
CONSTITUTION: Zeolite is treated with an aqueous solution of sulfate, nitrates or the like of cobalt and/or nickel so as the exchange 10W90% of the ion exchange capacity of zeolite with cobalt ions and/or nickel ions. Then, after enough linsing, the zeolite is contacted with an aqueous alkaline solution containing a chlorine compound (e.g. sodium hypochlorite, chlorine gas) to form a zeolite catalyst. Waste water is contacted with the zeolite catalyst in the presence of chlorine compound so as to oxidize and decompose organic matter.
