Abstract
PURPOSE:To perform efficient and complete adsorptive removal of heavy metals from waste water by adding an oxidizing agent to a waste water containing heavy metal to decompose organic material in the water and then followed by contacting a chelate resin. CONSTITUTION:Heavy-metal-containing waste water such as industrial and hospital waste water undergoes a pretreatment by adding oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite and/or sodium hydroxide to decompose organic material in the water. Then, if required after surplus oxidizing agent is decomposed by a reducing agent such as soduim sulfite, the waste water is adjusted to pH2-9 by use of mineral acid. Thereafter, the waste water is treated by using a chelate resin having functional group of metal salts of iminopropionic acid and/or iminodipropionic acid (where metal is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal). Since the effect of organic material has been removed, heavy metals in the waste water are nearly completely adsorbed and removed.
