Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove deposits on the surface of or in the surface portion of an ion exchange membrane effectively by washing it with an aqueous solution containing specific concentrations of a hypochlorite and an alkali.
CONSTITUTION: The used ion exchange membrane, on the surface of or in the surface portion of which dissolved substances, microorganisms, etc., deposit, is washed with an aqueous solution containing 50W10,000ppm (as available chlorine) of a hypochlorite, such as sodium hypochlorite, and 0.5W5% an alkali, such as caustic soda, and thereby deposits on the surface of or in the surface portion of the ion exchange membrane can be removed effectively without causing the exchange membrane to deteriorate.
