Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the receiving mouth from being left unhardened in high frequency induction quenching of the external surface of a constant-speed universal joint outer ring of a car, by cooling with water the external wall surface of the receiving mouth. CONSTITUTION:A high-frequency induction quenching coil 11 is inserted into the receiving mouth 3 of the constant-speed universal joint outer ring 1 of a car. Either one of the outer ring 1 or the coil 11 is rotated and current is passed through 11, so that quenched layer B is formed on the internal surface of the receiving mouth 3. At this time, the external wall of the receiving mouth 3 is cooled with water from the outside. In this way, the receiving mouth shoulder 10 and recessed groove 7 for holding joint ball whose part is thin wall section of the receiving mouth 3 is subjected to heating at the speed slower than that at other section such as rib 8, so that uniform-thickness hardened-layer B is formed. Thus, this method prevents the receiving mouth 3 from being left unhardened.
