763,492. Heat treatment of cast iron. WELLWORTHY, Ltd. June 28, 1955 [March 29, 1954], No. 9127/54. Class 72 [Also in Group XXVI] A method of hardening and tempering a cast iron cylinder liner having a flange adjacent one end comprises differentially heating the liner so that part of the body of the liner is heated to above the critical temperature to produce a markesite structure on quenching and the flange is left in the " as cast " condition. As shown, a liner 1 is suspended in a furnace 2 heated by elements 3 in such manner that the flange 4 is not heated. After quenching the body part has a martensitic structure while the flange is unchanged. A ribbed cap 6 of copper, which may be cooled by a current of air, may be placed on the flange to dissipate heat. In a modification the liner may be inverted with the flange resting on a base, e.g. of cast iron, which may be water cooled.
