PURPOSE:To perform an excellent recording even if recording paper having different sizes are applied to a heating element, by a method wherein a gap size holding member is located for keeping a constant gap between the heating element and a pressing member, irrespective of width of the recording paper positioned in the space formed by the heating element and the pressing member. CONSTITUTION:A laminar or beltlike spacer 8 is located between a thermal head 1 and a platen roller 5 so that it is levelled higher than a height of a heating object row, being positioned on an extension line of a heating object surface and outside a travelling area of a recording paper having the maximum width. Irrespective of the paper width of the recording paper 4, an image density is uniformed by reducing and uniforming a difference in a contact pressure provided in the direction of a paper width between the heating object surface and the recording paper.
