Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the machinability and wear resistance of the title alloy by mixing cast iron powder and ferrochromium powder and sintering the mixture to provide a specified composition contg. C, Si, Mn, Cr and impurities other than Fe.
CONSTITUTION: Cast iron powder and ferrochromium powder are mixed and sintered by a powder metallurigical process to obtain an Fe type sintered alloy having a composition consisting of, by weight, C 2.5W3.5%, Si 1.5W2.7%, Mn 0.5W1.0%, Cr 1.0W7.0%, impurities ≤2% and the balance Fe. This alloy has superior machinability and wear resistance, is cheaply manufactured, and is suitable for use as a material especially for valve seats of an internal combustion engine.
