Abstract
PURPOSE: To inexpensively manufacture a forged alloy with superior machinability, toughness and strength by mixing cast iron powder contg. specified amounts of C, Si and Mn with iron powder so as to adjust the total amount of C to a prescribed range and by carrying out sintering and forging.
CONSTITUTION: Cast iron powder having ≤200μm grain size and consisting of, by wt., 2.8W3.8% C, 1.5W2.5% Si, 0.5W1.0% Mn and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities is mixed with iron powder so as to adjust the total amount of C to 1.2W2.0%. Zinc stearate as a lubricant is added to the mixture by about 0.5% of the total amount and mixed by means of a mixer. This mixture is compacted to form a green compact. The compact is hot forged in a decomposed gaseous NH3 atmosphere and allowed to cool in the air to obtain the desired sintered and forged alloy. The resulting forged alloy uses cast iron powder prepared by repulverizing inexpensive cast iron shavings and iron powder as starting materials and shows high strength, superior machinability and wear resistance without carrying out tempering.
